What these worksheets practise

Addition worksheets build two skills at once: quick recall of addition facts, and the written method for adding larger numbers column by column. Each worksheet has 20 problems per page, and you choose how many digits each of the two numbers has (1 to 5), so the same generator covers everything from first-grade facts to multi-digit sums.

Single-digit numbers on the worksheets are between 2 and 9. With more digits, problems involve carrying (also called regrouping): when a column adds up to 10 or more, the tens digit moves to the next column. For older students, negative numbers can be switched on for either number.

Worked examples

Two digits plus one digit: 47+847 + 8

Ones: 7+8=157 + 8 = 15. Write 5 and carry 1 to the tens. Tens: 4+1=54 + 1 = 5.

47+8=5547 + 8 = 55

Three digits plus two digits: 368+57368 + 57

Ones: 8+7=158 + 7 = 15, write 5, carry 1. Tens: 6+5+1=126 + 5 + 1 = 12, write 2, carry 1. Hundreds: 3+1=43 + 1 = 4.

368+57=425368 + 57 = 425

Check your answers

Subtract one number from the answer: 425−57=368425 - 57 = 368. Estimating also helps: 368+57368 + 57 is about 370+60=430370 + 60 = 430, so 425 is reasonable.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to carry. 47+847 + 8 written as 45 drops the carried 1.
  • Writing the whole column sum. Writing 15 under the ones column turns 47+847 + 8 into 415.
  • Misaligned columns. The 8 in 47+847 + 8 belongs under the 7, not under the 4. Line up numbers from the right.
  • Adding the carry twice. A carried 1 is added once, to the next column only.

A practice path through the settings

  1. One digit plus one digit. The addition facts: every sum is between 4 and 18. Repeat until a page feels easy.
  2. Teens plus one digit. Set the first number to 2 digits with a Max Value of 20, so it runs from 10 to 20. Many of these sums cross into the next ten, which is the first step towards carrying.
  3. Two digits plus one digit. Set the Max Value back to 99. Carrying now happens in the ones column on many problems.
  4. Two digits plus two digits, then three plus two. Carrying can happen in more than one column, so neat columns matter.

Move to the next step when a page comes back with almost no mistakes, and keep the number of pages small at each new step.

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Start with one digit plus one digit until facts are quick, then move to two digits plus one digit.
  • Grid paper keeps columns lined up for multi-digit problems.
  • Timing one page and trying to beat the time a week later is a motivating way to build fluency.
